Kayaking Massachusetts

Kayaking Massachusetts is a perfect way to create your own adventure. Choose any of these trips and you will want to go again and again.

Please note that some of these trips are dependent on your preference of quiet water or white-water. Both can be found in Massachusetts, and this guide will show you where to get in and get out depending on your needs. I will also explain what to expect on each trip, the length of each trip and what you might see along the way. Each trip can be done in a day.

Keep in mind the time of year and weather conditions before going kayaking. Water conditions can change very quickly if there have been heavy rains or a sudden spring thaw. The rivers run higher and faster at these times and can be very dangerous. The best way to gauge if a river is high is to check the shoreline. If there are trees or bushes in the water, the river is above normal. Because of that, things may be very different than what I describe here!

Again, please do not try a white-water river if you are a beginner to this sport! Remember, know your limits when it comes to kayaking!

Deerfield River

This trip takes you below Shelburne Falls to Greenfield in northwestern Massachusetts. It is a beautiful stretch of river with only small bumpy areas. The Deerfield River also has great white-water rafting trips.

Ware River

This stretch of the Ware River runs from just south of Ware down to to the Thorndike Dam. It is a river rarely used by kayakers.

Quaboag River

This river has something for kayakers of all skill levels. But don't worry, the route I show you is very calm.

Ipswich River

The Ipswich River is one of the most popular rivers in eastern Massachusetts for kayakers. This trip takes you through Topsfield.

Concord River

The Concord River is considered by many to be one of the best rivers in northeastern Massachusetts. It is a river full of history and beautiful scenery.

Walden Pond

Walden Pond is known mainly for Henry David Thoreau and its swimming. But this pond is a very peaceful place to go kayaking Massachusetts.

Shawsheen River

The Shawsheen River is a beautiful, meandering waterway. This trip will take you from Billerica to Ballardvale.

Charles River

The Charles River has been a major waterway for this area since Massachusetts was a colony. This kayaking Massachusetts trip will take you through the lesser-known part of the Charles River.

North River

I consider all the rivers listed here as scenic. But for the North River, the term is not only proper, but actually official. It is protected under the Massachusetts Scenic Rivers Act. Since it is also a tidal river, it gives you many options for your kayaking trip.

Taunton River

This river is recommended for beginners and family groups. The current is moderate, no places where you have to carry your kayak over and no major rapids.
